Developers now have easy access to UK tidal data with the new ADMIRALTY API
July 02, 2018What is the ADMIRALTY API?
The ADMIRALTY API enables you to access tidal predictions for the UK coastline. It allows anyone with access to get predictions of high tide and low tide times, pinpoint permanent and temporary tide stations around the UK and more. As a world leader for hydrography, UKHO provides updates on geospatial information to aid maritime data solutions on a global scale.
Why is access to the ADMIRALTY API needed?
Any applications using the ADMIRALTY API will be able to produce tidal predictions for up to 6 days in advance at a wide range of locations across the UK coastline. The interface will allow you to create applications that identify and locate over 600 permanent and temporary tide stations around the UK, plus over 40 stations in the Environment Agency's UK National Tidal Network and stations from Port Authorities at many of the UK's primary and secondary ports. In addition, you can retrieve up to 10 requests per second and 10,000 requests per month from the UKHO's tidal database at no charge.
Who is impacted?
The UK Tidal API gives software developers access to accurate data from the UK’s largest authoritative network of tidal stations, permitting them to build tidal height and time predictions into their own online applications. This vital information can give businesses a clear vision of coastal conditions around the UK to support a wide range of tasks, whether choosing the best time to go surfing or sailing around the UK’s beaches to supporting maritime infrastructure development.
Is the ADMIRALTY API just for developers?
Having recently completed a beta testing process with key partners and technology companies including the National Coastwatch Institution, the ADMIRALTY API is now being released to the public. According to Michelle Case, Product Manager at UKHO, “We believe that data about our oceans has the potential to reshape the way that we preserve, use and benefit from them - so we are extremely excited to see how this tool is used. Going forward, we are committed to supporting businesses by working to provide access to the wide range of data we hold.”
