Vessels sailing under the Saudi Arabia Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Saudi Arabia Country Flag is represented by a forest green background, the official color of Islam. Arab language text appears centered on the flag in bold white Arabic script, and a white sword appears under the writing. The phrase is translated to say, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Prophet." The sword, which points toward the hoist, or left side represents the victories of Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud and his swift and wise justice and was added to the flag in 1906. The current version of the Saudi Arabia Country Flag was officially adopted in 1973 as the national symbol after a few minor modifications. This current version of the Flag is only used for official purposes, while the citizens of Saudi Arabia fly flags of solid green, adorned with a gold colored palm tree. Two crossed swords reside under the tree and the emblems are situated in the upper fly, or right quadrant. The Saudi Arabia Country flag is designated to be proportioned at a ratio of 2:3, height to length, respectively.
