Vessels sailing under the Cuba country flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. This particular type of triangle was chosen to symbolize equality, which is very important to the Cuban people. In Cuba, the flag's single white star is called "La Estrella Solitaria," which means "The Lone Star." The star represents the total independence of the Cuban people.
