Vessels sailing under the Italy Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Italy Country Flag may be recognized by it's three, equally proportioned vertical stripes. These are colored the officially approved shades of fern green, bright white and flame scarlet from the hoist, or left side to the fly, or right side. The Flag is designated to be proportioned at a ratio of 2:3, height to length, respectively. It was officially adopted as the national symbol in 1919, although it had been used since 1861 with the addition of royal emblems. The official adoption of the Italy Country Flag, or Tricolore with the official colors was completed in 1948. The red color is meant to represent the strength and valor of Italian citizens and the military sacrifices they have made for the country, while the white is symbolic of the peace to be enjoyed, honoring the honesty and purity of the citizens. Green stands for hope for the future and happiness for the people. The Naval Jack is added to the Italian civil and naval flags. This emblem has been incorporated in order to distinguish them from other similar flags.
