What is ECDIS Generic Training?

The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) is a critical tool in modern navigation, enhancing situational awareness and compliance with international maritime regulations. Our ECDIS Generic Training Course is designed to provide mariners with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate ECDIS effectively and safely.

ECDIS Generic Training is a standardized training program designed to ensure that mariners are proficient in the use of an Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) as a primary means of navigation. This training is based on IMO Model Course 1.27 and is a mandatory requirement under the STCW Convention (as amended in 2010) for deck officers, including Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW), Chief Mates, and Masters, serving on vessels equipped with ECDIS. The course provides mariners with essential knowledge of ECDIS functions, capabilities, and limitations, covering topics such as system components, chart data management, passage planning, safety settings, and emergency procedures. It emphasizes proper use of ECDIS to enhance situational awareness while also addressing potential risks associated with over-reliance on electronic navigation. Successful completion of the training ensures that mariners meet international competency standards and prevents STCW certification limitations that would restrict them from serving on ECDIS-equipped vessels.
Gain proficiency in route planning, monitoring, and alarm management.
Develop competency in system configuration, data updates, and safety settings. Enhance their ability to recognize system limitations and apply backup procedures.
