Overview

With the relatively recent rapid expansion of the LNG fleet, this second edition provides up to date guidance on the minimum standards to which officers should be trained and reference to the knowledge that underpins it. Written by SIGTTO, this book is an essential companion to anyone serving on an LNG vessel or any operator who has LNG vessels within their fleet.

The LNG shipping industry has an exceptional safety record, but is expanding and changing in a way that will bring with it many challenges that the industry will have to respond to in order to maintain that record.

These standards are a guide for the industry, and their implementation and adoption is not mandatory. However, they have been produced after consulting with the industry and represent the default best practice operational training standards for officers on board LNG vessels.

The standards were written using the competence based methodology, which is used by the STCW and throughout the industry in general. They cover all officer ranks on LNG vessels, including electricians and cargo engineers. They should be used to ensure that a common standard of minimum training is present throughout the industry.
