Vessels sailing under the Bahrain country flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage on-board to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Bahrain flag since 1972 has consisted of a white band on the left, separated from a red area on the right by five triangles that serve as a zig-zag pattern. The five triangles symbolize the five pillars of Islam. The left white side takes up approximately 32.5% of the flag's ratio while the red color on the right comprises 67.5% of the area. The color red is meant to represent the Kharijite sect of Islam whereas the color white symbolizes peace with its neighbors. Bahrain Flag is often mistaken for the flag of Qatar, which has more points, 9 in total and has a darker maroon shade instead of a vibrant red.
