Vessels sailing under the Mozambique Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The Mozambique Country Flag is represented by five horizontal stripes. A green stripe adorns the top, while a similar yellow bar covers the bottom. The middle of the flag has a black stripe bisecting two smaller white stripes. A red isosceles triangle is footed against the hoist, or left side of the flag, pointing toward the fly, or right side. Inside the triangle is a golden five pointed star. A open book with white pages lies in the center of the star, and depictions of a gardening hoe and an AK47 assault weapon lie crossing each other, the star and book. The red represents the struggle for independence. The green is meant to represent the land, while the yellow stands for the mineral wealth of Mozambique. Black represents the African continent. The yellow star shows the socialist political system and the book is meant to represent education. The depictions of the hoe and assault rifle demonstrate agricultural work and the determination to defend their society, respectively.
