Vessels sailing under the Iran Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Iran Country Flag is distinguished by it's three, equally proportioned horizontal stripes. These are colored green, white and red from top to bottom. The National Emblem of Iran is seated in the center of the Flag, placed within the white stripe. The Emblem consists of four red crescents, two to the hoist, or left side opening toward the fly, or right side, and two to the fly, opening toward the hoist. In formation, they form two white crescents, one on either side of a central sword which appears vertically placed. The Emblem is colored red. Running the length of the Flag on the dividing line between the green and white stripes and also between the red and white stripe is written the Takbir. It is repeated 22 times, 11 in the green-white border and 11 in the red-white border. The Takbir is described in ancient Kufic script. It reads, "Allahu Akbar", translating to the English language, "Allah Is The Greater" or "God Is Great". Adopted in 1980, the Flag is proportioned at 4:7, height to length.
