Vessels sailing under the Dominican Republic country flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The colors in the Dominican Republic flag include vermilion red, white color in the shield, and ultramarine blue. At the center, there is a white cross extending to the edge that makes the flag be divided into four rectangles. The white cross symbolizes honor, pride and faith of Dominicans. There is also a coat of arms that features a shield. The shield then gets its support from the olive branch to the left and a palm branch to the right that is all at the center of the cross. At the bottom of the shield, there is a red ribbon with the name of the country “Republica Dominicana.” There is writing on the blue ribbon on the shield that displays“Patria, Libertad, Dios” that has a meaning of Fatherland, Liberty, and God. A Bible is opened with a verse in the shield, and the verse quotes “And the truth shall set you free.” The red color symbolizes the blood of his struggle for independence, white symbolizes salvation, and dignity to the peaceful characters of the Dominicans and blue symbolizes liberty.
