Vessels sailing under the Marshall Islands Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.

The Marshall Islands Country Flag is represented by a dark blue background broken by two stripes originating from a point at the lower hoist, or left side corner of the flag and continuing in a slight curve. The stripes widen as they cross the flag and end at the fly side, reaching the upper fly corner and covering a third of the total area toward the bottom. The upper stripe is colored orange, while the lower stripe is colored white. In the upper hoist side quadrant stands a white, 24 point star. The points facing north, south, east and west are elongated into rays. The Marshall Islands Country Flag was officially adopted in 1979. It is designed with a proportional ratio of 10:19, height to length, respectively. The Flag is designed to reflect the geographical location of the country. The Marshall Islands are located just north of the equator, represented by the colored stripes. The star is offset toward the left, imitating the country's position related to the International Dateline. The blue color represents the Pacific Ocean.
