Vessels sailing under the Turks and Caicos Country Flag are required to have on board this flag as part of flag state requirements that derive from maritime regulations in the International Code of Signals and the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. These codes are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) as an ongoing effort to reinforce maritime safety procedures and communications to the international maritime community. Fleet management companies and ship owners are responsible to ensure that each vessel in their respective fleets have the appropriate flag signage onboard to be in compliance. This flag is used to identify the flag state a vessel is sailing under and to communicate with other vessels under the provisions of the International Code of Signals.
The Turks and Caicos Country Flag is represented by a navy blue background. In the upper left quadrant, or hoist side a Union Jack appears. This is the United Kingdom national symbol, appearing as a navy blue background crossed by two receded red stripes that are outlined in white. A centered red cross drawn with larger stripes appears to the forward, also outlined in white. To the fly side, or right of the flag a crest appears. It is gold or yellow, emblazoned with the images of a conch, a lobster and a cactus. The crest is shaped as a shield, and sits centered in the blue background and offset from the fly toward the hoist side. It is one half the height of the flag. The Union Jack represents the country's close ties to the United Kingdom, while the animals on the crest depict several important creatures that are native to the region and have impacted the population. The Turks and Caicos Country Flag is designated to a proportionate ratio of 1:2, height to length, respectively.
